New to us this is a stunning large, deciduous shrub or eventually very small tree with dark bronze-purple spring and summer leaves and masses of white snowbell-like flowers running along the branches in early summer.

These flowers are followed by small jade green pearl-like fruit later on in the summer.

Styrax japonica 'Evening Light' is a handsome garden tree best suited for sun or light, dappled shade in a position out of strong winds.


  • Position: Sheltered in full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Moist, fertile, lime free soil. Will tolerate damp but well drained soil. Avoid wet or waterlogged areas.
  • Hardiness: Reasonably hardy. Styrax japonica 'Evening Light'  requires shelter from cold winter winds.
  • Flowering Period: June.
