An unusual large shrub or eventually very small tree, Staphylea colchica has masses of lightly fragrant, bell-shaped white flowers in late spring/early summer. These flowers are followed by interesting inflated, bladder-like fruit. The leaves are pinnate (feather-like) and mid green in colour occasionally turning shades of yellow and bronze before falling in autumn.

Staphylea colchica is ornamental and a fine addition to the garden, usually looking best in a woodland setting or as part of a shrub-filled border.
