A rare small tree native to China, Pseudocydonia sinensis is semi-evergreen and related to Cydonia (Quince) with dark green leaves that turn vivid shades of orange and dark red in a cold autumn/winter.

Once established it also has mottled, tactile, flaking bark which is ornamental in its own right. In spring it has pale pink flowers, followed by large yellow fruit on mature plants (requires a reliably warm, sunny position for fruit).

  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Moist yet well drained, fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Flowering Period:April - May.
  • Flower Colour: Pale pink
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate.
  • Habit: Small branching tree with a somewhat rounded habit once established.
    • Height: 4 m (20 ft)
    • Spread: 4 m (20 ft)
  • Notes: Pseudocydonia sinensis will produce flowers on year old wood and so heavy pruning is best avoided. To reliably produce fruit, this is best planted in a warm, sunny spot, preferably next to a wall or fence. This plant is also known as Chaenomeles sinensis
