(Yunnan Pine) Rare in the UK, this is a very handsome tree with long, flowering dark green needles and an elegant, upright habit. Although a sizable tree in its natural habitat, with us here in Derbyshire, this gradually develops into a significantly smaller tree.

Requires a warm, sheltered position and not suitable for cold, exposed areas.

Rare in the UK, this is a very handsome tree with long, flowering dark green needles and an elegant, upright habit. Although a sizable tree in its natural habitat, with us here in Derbyshire, this gradually develops into a significantly smaller tree.

The long needles are amazing, particular on established specimens.


  • Position: Full sun or occasional dappled shade.
  • Soil: Well drained, fertile soil. Avoid waterlogged areas.
  • Hardiness: Somewhat hardy. Requires a warm, sheltered position and dislikes strong wind.
  • Rate of Growth: Slow growing initially and then moderate.
  • Habit: Pinus yunnanensis grows to be a small, fairly upright tree.
    • Height: up to 8 - 10 m (26 - 32 ft) or possibly taller in very favourable areas
    • Spread: up to 3 - 4 m (10 - 13 ft)
