A classic garden plant native to South-east China, Phyllostachys aurea has spectacular tall, golden-yellow canes when established and lush green leaves which make a wonderful rustling sound in a breeze. It is evergreen, a little slow to grow at first, but beautiful when established and can give a very oriental feel to a garden.

The golden canes look especially good against a dark background and this is suitable for growing in a large container.

  • Position: Sun or partial shade.
  • Soil: Moist, fertile soil.

  • Habit: Tall, spreading bamboo.
    • Height: 2.5 m (8 ft)

  • Notes: Mature Phyllostachys aurea benefit from an annual thinning out of weaker canes, to create a 10 cm space between each stem. This helps strengthen the plant and the cut stems can be used to support other plants in the garden.
