(Tulip Tree) A majestic tree native to North America, Liriodendron tulipifera has colourful flowers once established and large, spade-like, green leaves which turn butter-yellow in autumn before falling. The bark of established specimens develops a smoky-purple hue.

When mature it has masses of pretty yellow-green, tulip-like flowers on the branches(hence the trees common name).

A magnificent specimen tree suited for larger gardens and areas with plenty of space.

  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Moist, fertile soil. Liriodendron tulipifera does generally not grow well in dry soils, prone to drying out in summer.
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Flowering Period: June - July.
  • Flower Colour: Yellowish-green with orange markings
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate to vigorous.
  • Habit: Large branching tree, upright initially with a rounded crown once mature.
    • Height: 30 m (98 ft).
    • Spread: 15 m (50 ft).
  • Important: This plant will produce better quality, larger leaves in a position sheltered from strong winds. Please bare in mind that Liriodendron tulipifera does not usually start flowering for between 15 - 25 years.
