A rare hazel, Corylus avellana 'Pendula' has a stiffly pendulous habit and is  eye-catching when the main leader is trained up a tall cane to encourage it to grow as an elegant, slender weeping tree.

Once the support is removed, the branches will cascade down and the tree will not really grow any taller. In spring Corylus avellana 'Pendula' is covered with long, ornamental catkins in spring and the leaves are a deep, lush green when they emerge later in the year.


  • Position: Full sun or partial shade.
  • Soil: Any fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Flowering Period: January to March (Catkins).
  • Rate of Growth: Slow to moderate.
  • Habit: Small, weeping tree with stiffly pendulous branches. The height and spread can be adjusted by training the main leader upwards with a support or else, if left without support, Corylus avellana 'Pendula' weep from a low height.
    • Height: Up to 3 m (10 ft).
    • Spread: Up to 4 m (13 ft).
