Native to parts of Japan, Korea and mainland China, Cleyera japonica is an evergreen shrub or eventually very small tree with a distinctive layered habit and attractive, glossy, dark green leaves.

Masses of small yet fragrant, creamy flowers appear on the branches in mid summer. The flowers are followed by small red fruit in autumn which turn black as they age. A fascinating and very pretty shrub for a warm, sheltered garden.

  • Position: Sheltered in full sun.
  • Soil: Acid, fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Frost tender. Cleyera japonica requires protection from cold winter winds and is most suitable for warm, south or west facing gardens.
  • Rate of Growth: Slow to moderate.
  • Habit: Medium sized shrub.
    • Height: up to 2.5 m (8 ft)
    • Spread: 2 m (6 ft)
  • Notes: Please also note that although we usually guarantee plants for a year after purchase, we will NOT replace a Cleyera japonica which is damaged or killed by winter cold.
