Betula nigra 'Heritage' - bark

Betula nigra 'Heritage'

Sorry, now sold out
£95.00

(River Birch) Native to North America, Betula nigra 'Heritage' has graceful branches and attractive peeling bark once established. The leaves are oval, glossy green and the bark tends to be pink when young before turning brown and ridged on older trees.

Once established this Birch has a natural multi-stemmed habit and is an excellent choice for planting in damp yet well drained areas, near ponds or streams.

Although this has a reputation for enjoying wet areas, we have  found it can actually struggle in permanently waterlogged areas or sites prone to flooding here in our arboretum in Derbyshire and so please do avoid planting in these conditions. Well drained but damp soil with plenty of sun is much preferable.

  • Position: Full sun.
  • Soil: Any fertile, moist soil which does not become waterlogged. This Birch does not particularly enjoy or grow well in soils prone to drying out!
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate
  • Habit: Small to medium sized branching tree once established.
    • Height: 10 - 15 m (32 - 50 ft)
    • Spread: 8 - 10 m (26 - 32 ft)
  • Notes: For best effect, the bark should be scrubbed gently with a hand brush and water once a year. This removes any green algae or grime and helps to restore the colour.
