Aralia decaisneana

New to us, Aralia decaisneana is a rare tall shrub with large and eye-catching, bipinnately composed leaves covered with fine spines. These leaves seem to develop pleasing orange and purple tints before falling in autumn. Panicles of white flower in summer once established.

Requires a warm, sheltered position and not suitable for cold, exposed and windy gardens.

• Position: Warm, full sun or shade in a position sheltered from strong winds.
• Soil: Any well drained, fertile soil.
• Hardiness: Somewhat hardy. The young foliage can be damaged by late frost and this is best planted in a position out of early morning sunlight. May require protection in severe winters,

• Rate of Growth: Slow to moderate
• Habit: Aralia decaisneana grows to tall, often multi-stemmed large shrub.
