Rare small tree native to Western China, Paulownia fargesii has tubular, pale lavender flowers in late spring once established. The leaves are mid green and fairly large, up to approx 15 - 30 cm long.

A very handsome specimen tree, best suited to a position in full sun with good drainage. Slow in the first year or two when getting established and then more vigorous.

  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Moist or well drained, fertile soil. Avoid wet or areas prone to flooding.
  • Hardiness: Reasonably hardy. Paulownia fargesii can suffer some die back after very cold winters, especially as a young plant and will grow best in a warm sunny garden. Shelter from cold winds.
  • Flowering Period: May.
  • Flower Colour: Lavender
  • Rate of Growth: Slow when young here and then moderate to vigorous (with plants in warm areas growing more quickly).
  • Habit: Small to medium sized branching tree.
    • Height: 8 - 12 m (26 - 40 ft)
    • Spread: 6 - 8 m (20 - 26 ft)
  • Notes: In colder areas of the U.K. over wintering flower buds can be caught and damaged by severe frosts in winter and therefore  Paulownia fargesii are more likely to flower well in warm, sheltered areas
