A handsome evergreen shrub native to parts of Japan, Korea and China, Daphniphyllum macropodum has large Rhododendron-like, glossy, dark green leaves. The fresh leaves in spring are much more pale green in colour than the mature leaves which gives an interesting contrast.

Purplish male flowers and green female flowers appear on separate plants in late spring once established with females bearing heavily bloomed black berries in autumn.

Daphniphyllum macropodum is most suitable for a sheltered position in sun or partial shade.
