Description

Native to Chile, Berberis valdiviana is an evergreen shrub with large, dark green, nearly spineless leaves and racemes of saffron-yellow flowers in late spring or early summer.

Berberis valdiviana is known to be difficult to propagate but usually grows well once planted out and will become a very handsome shrub with an exquisite flower display once established.

Supplied Size: 2L/3L pots (approx 3 - 4 years old, 25 - 40 cm tall)


  • Position: Full sun or partial shade.
  • Soil: Most well drained, fertile soil. Berberis valdiviana does not usually enjoy wet or waterlogged soils.
  • Hardiness: Reasonably hardy. Avoid planting in cold, windy, exposed areas.
  • Flowering Period: May - June.
  • Flower Colour: Saffron-yellow
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate.
  • Habit: Berberis valdiviana  grows to be a medium sized shrub in the short term, eventually large.
    • Height: 2.5 - 4 m (8 - 13 ft)
