Description

This is an attractive and distinctive tree that can be found in the wild growing in the foot hills and mountains of northern China. Rare in the UK, this has pretty panicles of white flowers in late spring or early summer and large, bright green leaves. Very large fruit (conkers) in autumn.

Aesculus chinensis makes an unusual specimen tree that although slowish growing does eventually reach a good size and is suitable for large gardens or woodland areas.

Supplied Size: 3L/4L pots (seed grown, 2- 3 years old, 40 - 60 cm tall)


  • Position: Full sun or partial shade.
  • Soil: Any well drained, fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Flowering Period: May-June.
  • Rate of Growth: Slow initially then moderate.
  • Habit: Aesculus chinensis grows to be a medium sized to large spreading tree.
    • Height: 12 - 15 m (40 - 50 ft)
    • Spread: 10 m (32 ft)

Suitable for a position in full sun and most well drained soils. It is hardy and fairly slow growing, reaching a height of 2 - 3 m and a spread of 2 m in 8 - 12 years, although it ultimately grows to be a medium sized tree.

These are generally available as 2 - 3 year old plants at a height of 40 - 60 cm in 3 L pots
