Native to Japan, Acer palmatum has smooth grey bark and handsome, deeply cut leaves which turn vivid shades of orange, red or yellow before falling in autumn. The typical autumn colour can be seen in the photo on the left and normal green summer foliage in the middle photo.
A lovely spreading garden plant with elegant leaves which eventually grows to be a large multi-stemmed shrub or very small tree. Acer palmatum can also be grown in a large container if required.
