A beautiful and uncommon birch tree which originates from the Chinese side of the Himalayas and has lovely chestnut-red bark once established.

An excellent hardy, medium sized specimen tree with unusual coloured bark which looks very attractive when planted alongside silver or white barked birch.

  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Any fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Rate of Growth: Vigorous (moderate if grown as a multi-stemmed tree)
  • Habit: Small or medium sized tree with a slender habit.
    • Height: 10 - 15 m (32 - 50 ft)
    • Spread: 10 m (32 ft)
  • Notes: For best effect, the bark should be scrubbed gently with a hand brush and water once a year. This removes any green algae or grime and helps to restore the colour. Bark colour can take 2 - 4 years to develop. Previously known as Betula utilis var. prattii
