Sorbus x 'Joseph Rock' has superb autumn colour and was introduced to the west after it was identified in China in the early twentieth century by the famed plant hunter, Joseph Rock.

This rowan has cool green, pinnate (feather-like) leaves which turn fabulous shades blood red in autumn before falling. This vivid autumn colour is complimented by large clusters of bright yellow fruit!

An excellent, reliable small garden tree.

  • Soil: Well drained, fertile soils.

  • Flowering Period: May.
  • Rate of Growth: Vigorous.
  • Habit: Sorbus x 'Joseph Rock' grows to be a small, branching, rounded tree.
    • Height: 8 m (26 ft)
    • Spread: 6 m (20 ft)
  • Notes: The berries of a Sorbus x 'Joseph Rock' tend to last on the tree until late in autumn, as birds will generally leave the yellow fruit until last when hungry, preferring to eat the red and orange coloured berries first.
  • Important Please Read - Sorbus (Rowan / Mountain Ash) species and cultivars are not and cannot be affected by the Ash disease, Chalara fraxinea.  Despite the potentially confusing name, mountain ashes are actually in the rose family, Rosacaea, and are closely related to apples and pears etc. Fraxinus excelsior (Common ash), are in the olive family, Oleaceae and the wind born disease recently found in the UK is completely specific to this genus.
