A low growing, evergreen, holly-like shrub which belongs to the Lily family and is a native to the Mediterranean region and North Africa. Ruscus aculeatus has dark green, prickly leaves and small, inconspicuous white flowers in spring. These flowers are followed by bright red fruit later in the year.

Ruscus aculeatus is an excellent low shrub for dry, shady areas in a garden.


  • Position: Sun or shade.
  • Soil: Well drained soil. Ruscus aculeatus does not grow well in very wet soils.
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Flowering Period: January - April

  • Rate of Growth: Very slow
  • Habit: Ruscus aculeatus grows to be a low, densely branching shrub.
    • Height: up to 80 cm (2 ½ ft).
