Description

A colourful cultivar introduced from Holland in the 19th century, Magnolia x soulangiana 'Rustica Rubra' has superb, dark red-purple flower buds in early spring. These buds open into large, goblet-shaped, bright pink flowers with petals which lighten to pale pinkish-white near the tips. These flowers appear before the dark green leaves emerge. Later in the year this Magnolia has eye-catching large, bright red fruit with vivid orange seed. A lovely garden plant!

• Notes: We have found that although hardy, this Magnolia x soulangiana 'Rustica Rubra' is best planted in an area which does not receive early morning sunlight in spring, as this combined with a frost can cause damage to the flowers.
