Description

This semi-evergreen Magnolia with lovely large flowers is a new introduction to the United Kingdom from its native habitat in the swamps and low woods of the east coast of North America. Magnolia virginiana 'Moonglow' has wonderful long-lasting, lemon-scented, creamy white flowers in late spring and a striking upright habit. The leaves are large and cool green with a silver underside. An unusual, handsome garden plant!

• Common name: Sweetbay Magnolia.
• Position: Sheltered in full sun or light, dappled shade.
• Soil: Moist, lime-free or acidic soil.
• Hardiness: Reasonably hardy. A semi-evergreen Magnolia, this will loose its leaves in a cold winter, while retaining them in a milder one.
• Flowering Period: June - September.
• Flower Colour: Creamy white
• Rate of Growth: Moderate.
• Habit: Eventually a small spreading, branching tree.
  • Height: 8 m (26 ft).
  • Spread: 6 m (20 ft).
• Notes: Better quality leaves will be produced if Magnolia virginiana 'Moonglow' is grown in a position sheltered from strong winds.
