Description

Rare in the United Kingdom, this is a small semi-evergreen tree closely related to Magnolia which has long, dark green, glossy leaves and creamy white tinged pink or dark pink flowers. The flowers of Manglietia insignis can take a number of years to appear but are well worth the wait.

Requires a very warm, sheltered garden or can be grown as a conservatory plant if moved inside in the winter.

Supplied Size: 4L containers (100 - 125 cm tall)

  • Position: Warm, sheltered in full sun or light shade.
  • Soil: Moist, lime free soil.
  • Hardiness: Frost tender. Manglietia insignis is a new plant to us. We have planted one in our gardens here in Derbyshire and will update this description accordingly once we see how it does in the winter. We currently recommend that this should only be planted outside in the mildest of gardens. (Update April 2012:  The Manglietia planted here in November 2011 has survived the mild winter we had here in our arboretum - the coldest temperatures was approx -7oC)
  • Flowering Period: May.
  • Flower Colour: Pale to dark pink.
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate.
  • Habit: Manglietia insignis eventually grows to be a small, branching tree.
    • Height: up to 10 m (26 ft).
    • Spread: 6 m (20 ft).
  • Notes: This plant is sometimes also known as Magnolia insignis

Manglietia insignis is usually best grown by keen gardeners who are prepared give it significant protection it in the winter or by people in warm, reliably mild parts of the United Kingdom which do not experience cold winters.

Please also note that although we usually guarantee plants for a year after purchase, we will NOT replace a Manglietia insignis which is damaged or killed by winter cold.
