Description

A rare shrub or eventually small tree, Maddenia hypoleuca has cherry-like dark green leaves, which are tinged bronze or purple when they emerge in spring. Small clusters of attractive flowers with conspicuous cluster of yellowish stamen emerge in Spring followed by small black fruit later in the year.

Maddenia hypoleuca is best suited for a position in sun or light dappled shade with shelter from cold wind..

Supplied Size: 3 or 4L pots (30 - 40 cm tall) - this plant is not for instant gratification and recommended for experienced gardeners only.


  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Any fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Somewhat hardy. Maddenia hypoleuca requires shelter from cold wind.
  • Flowering Period: March - April.
  • Rate of Growth: Slow to moderate.
  • Habit: Maddenia hypoleuca grows to be a large shrub or eventually a very small tree.
