Native to parts of Eastern and Central USA, Juglans nigra is a reasonably vigorous tree with large, odd pinnate leaves up to 60 cm long which are aromatic when crushed. These leaves emerge in late spring and are dark green in colour. Juglans nigra is not grown for edible walnuts but does grow to form a very ornamental tree in time.
Juglas nigra forms a strong tap root when young and usually takes best when planted at a small size. Once established it grows vigorously but can take a few years to full settle down once planted.

The magnificent Black Walnut was introduced from Eastern and Central North America in the seventeenth century.
Walnuts should be planted as young as possible as they dislike root disturbance; old specimens are valued for their superb timber.
