Description

A deciduous shrub native to an huge area, stretching from Europe across Asia to Japan, Hippophae rhamnoides has silvery-grey leaves and female plants produce large clusters of vivid orange fruit. Armed with sharp thorns, Hippophae rhamnoides makes an ideal barrier plant, provides wildlife (particularly birds) with lots of food in the autumn and also can be grown as a wind break or screen in windy, coastal areas.

• Position: Full sun.
• Soil: Any well drained soil. Hippophae rhamnoides is very tolerant of nutritionally poor soil and dry soils.
• Hardiness: Fully hardy.
• Flowering Period: April.
• Flower Colour: Yellowish-green
• Rate of Growth: Moderate.
• Habit: Large branching shrub or very small tree.
• Height: up to 5 m (16 ft)
• Spread: 2.5 m (8 ft)
• Notes: These are a mixture of male and female plants raised from seed and ideal for mass group planting. Once established, Hippophae rhamnoides can sucker and form a dense thicket.
