Description

Rare form which has been in cultivation since the early nineteenth century, Fagus sylvatica 'Cristata' has fascinating dark green, cloud-like clumps of deeply lobed and curled leaves. These leaves are unusual in appearance and give the tree a unique appearance once established.

  • Common name: Cock's Comb Beech or Curly-leaved Beech.
  • Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Well drained, fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Rate of Growth: Slow until established, then moderate.
  • Habit: Small, branching tree.
    • Height: 8 m (26 ft).
    • Spread: 6 m (20 ft).
  • Notes: A specimen of Fagus sylvatica 'Cristata', planted in the woodland garden surrounding our nursery had reached a height of 3.5 m, a spread of 3 m after 14 years.
