Description

A large shrub or eventually very small tree, Corylus avellana is native to the UK and well known for producing catkins in spring and edible hazel nuts in late summer/autumn. Broad greens summer leaves with yellow and bronze autumn tints.

Corylus avellana is easy to grow and good for wildlife. It can be coppiced if required and is tolerant of both sun or some shade.

Supplied Size: 4L / 5L pots (approx 4 years old, 40 - 60 cm tall)


  • Position: Full sun or partial shade.
  • Soil: Any fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Hardy.
  • Flowering Period: January to March (Catkins).
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate to vigorous.
  • Habit: Large branching shrub or eventually a very small tree.
    • Height: 3 - 5 m (10 - 16 ft) if left unpruned.
    • Spread: 3 - 5 m (10 - 16 ft) if left unpruned.
