Description

Native to parts of the United States and Canada, Acer rubrum is a vigorous, medium sized tree known for its green leaves which show excellent red, orange or yellow autumn colour in October before falling. A reliable and quick growing garden tree which can also be planted as an unusual windbreak.

• Common name: Canadian Maple or Red Maple
• Position: Full sun or light, dappled shade.
• Soil: Any well drained, fertile soil. The autumn colour will be more intense in more acidic soils!
• Hardiness: Hardy.
• Rate of Growth: Vigorous.
• Habit: Medium sized tree with an oval crown once established.
• Height: 15 m (50 ft) / [up to 8 m (26 ft) after ten years]
• Spread: 10 m (32 ft) / [3 m (10 ft) after ten years]
• Notes: These Acer rubrum are grown from seed and as such the autumn colour can vary from plant to plant, with some trees turning yellow while others turn bright red.
