Description

A rare, deciduous climber native to Southern and Western ChinaSchisandra sphenanthera has eye-catching orange-red flowers. The flowers are 2 cm or so in diameter and appear in early summer.

A lovely, unusual climber ideal for a position in full sun or light shade up trellis, wires or established trees.

Supplied Size: 3L deep containers (approx 3 - 4 years old, 40 - 60 cm tall)


  • Position: Sun or light, dappled shade.
  • Soil: Moist, fertile soil.
  • Hardiness: Reasonably hardy.  Schisandra sphenanthera requires a warm position with shelter from cold winter winds.
  • Flowering Period: May - June.
  • Flower Colour: Orange-red.
  • Rate of Growth: Moderate.
  • Habit: Schisandra sphenanthera is a medium sized climbing plant which requires support as it will not self-cling.
    • Height: 5 m (16 ft)
    • Spread: 3 m (10 ft)
  • Notes: Schisandra sphenanthera  dislikes drying out and will generally not grow well in very free draining, dry soils.
